The drop in NBA television ratings in the first part of the season is largely attributed to the popularity of the NFL. NBA games are usually the main sporting event at Christmas and open the championship for a portion of the fans. This event is so significant for the league that proposals have been voiced to start the season from this date.
This year, the NFL stepped up the competition on the day of the holiday by striking a $150 million deal with Netflix to stream 2 Christmas Day games.
